Traditional Counselors
Hinaah Bits os Society is a Residential alcohol/drug treatment for men and women:  The traditional Native American residential treatment program, Hinaah Bits os Society (or Eagle Plume Society) is ideally the next step for protective custody clients.  The 60-day structured program, based on the Navajo "Beauty Way" philosophy, aims to teach relatives/clients to better respect themselves.  Clients are called relatives to acknowledge the unity between the person and the problem, as well as in keeping with Dine  K e (the clanship system) that all Navajos are related.
Motivational Interviewing is based on an assessment that takes place in the context of attentive listening and empathy on the part of the counseling staff.  A "helping relationship" with clients is characterized by listening reflectively, accepting clients "where they are", assessing their needs and strengths, and gently directing at-risk individuals to insight and action.

Motivational Interviewing enhances NCI's staff's natural ability to emphasize with the situations of their relatives/clients.  Skills developed in motivational interviewing training include formulating open-ended questions, navigating ambivalence, overcoming resistance, and attention to non-verbal cues.

Our counselors are licensed Dine Medicine men and/or Native American Church "roadmen" NCI has traditional practitioners to conduct sweat lodge and other traditional interventions to facilitate the healing process from alcohol and drugs.  If you have any questions for HBS please call ext. 117.
